They are the crushed seed kernels of the Neem tree (Azadirachta indica), left over after cold-press extraction of the oil, and are Certified Organic by BioGro New Zealand.
For new plants, add a handful to the planting hole (15-20cm deep) and mix into the soil, then sprinkle another handful around the plant surface. For established plants, apply 50 to 80 grams per square metre and lightly rake into the soil.
They're valued for discouraging soil-dwelling pests, including grass grub, root-knot nematodes, mealybugs and white butterfly larvae, while also enriching soil humus and supporting beneficial microbes as they break down.
Sprinkle 50 grams per square metre over a freshly mown lawn and water in thoroughly. The best timing is generally around December when grubs are hatching, and again around April to July depending on your region of NZ.
Yes, white mould developing on the granules is a normal part of the natural decomposition process and is actually beneficial to soil biology, not a sign the product has gone bad.
