Candles & Fragrance
EcoWarehouse stocks natural candles and fragrance products made from beeswax, soy, and other natural waxes. Conventional paraffin candles are a petroleum by-product and release synthetic fragrance compounds when burned. Natural wax candles with essential oil fragrance or no added fragrance are a straightforward alternative.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product that releases benzene and toluene when burned — both known carcinogens. Beeswax and soy wax candles burn cleaner, produce less soot, and last longer. Beeswax candles also release negative ions when burned, which can help neutralise airborne pollutants.
Beeswax is a natural animal by-product with a higher melting point, longer burn time, and natural honey scent. It burns the cleanest of any wax. Soy wax is plant-based, vegan, and burns slightly cooler than beeswax. Both are significantly better than paraffin. Beeswax candles are generally more expensive but last longer.
Synthetic fragrance in candles can contain phthalates (endocrine disruptors), benzene, and other volatile organic compounds that are released when the candle burns. For indoor air quality, candles scented with pure essential oils are a significantly safer choice. Look for candles that list specific essential oils rather than just "fragrance".
Beeswax candles burn approximately two to five times longer than paraffin candles of the same size due to the higher melting point and density of beeswax. Although they cost more upfront, the cost per hour of burn time is often comparable or better.
Essential oil diffusers disperse fragrance without combustion, which means no soot, no wax residue, and more precise control over scent intensity. They are generally considered better for air quality than candles. However, good quality beeswax candles with pure essential oil fragrance are a perfectly reasonable choice for occasional use and mood lighting.
Beeswax candles with cotton wicks and pure essential oil or unscented fragrance are the safest option. Avoid candles with metal-core wicks (which can release lead), synthetic fragrance, and paraffin wax. Always supervise candles around children and pets, and ensure good ventilation.
