Mineral sunscreen using non-nano zinc oxide is the recommended choice for babies from 6 months and young children. It provides immediate broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection without absorption into the bloodstream, is less likely to irritate sensitive skin than chemical sunscreens, and has the strongest safety record for paediatric use.

Natural body wash free from SLS, synthetic fragrance, and harsh preservatives is significantly better tolerated by eczema-prone skin than conventional body wash. SLS is a well-documented eczema trigger. Look for products with short, recognisable ingredient lists and no synthetic fragrance. Patch test on a small area first.

The New Zealand Melanoma Network recommends SPF 30 minimum for children outdoors, and SPF 50+ for extended outdoor activities, beach days, and high UV-index days. NZ has one of the highest UV indices in the world due to the depleted ozone layer over the Southern Hemisphere, making sun protection particularly important.

Children's skin is more permeable than adult skin and their developing hormonal and immune systems are more sensitive to chemical exposure. Synthetic fragrance can contain phthalates (endocrine disruptors) and other sensitising compounds. For children's skincare and body wash, fragrance-free or pure essential oil-scented products are significantly safer.

Zinc oxide creates a protective barrier over irritated skin. Calendula oil and cream have clinically demonstrated anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties and are well tolerated by infant skin. Shea butter and coconut oil provide moisture and a protective layer. These natural alternatives are effective for mild to moderate nappy rash.
