Wash weekly with a small amount of gentle shampoo or natural soap. Work the bristles gently with your fingers, rinse thoroughly, reshape, and dry flat or bristles-down to prevent water entering the ferrule and loosening the glue. Natural bristle brushes cleaned regularly last five to ten years.

Natural bristle brushes excel at picking up and blending powder formulations: eyeshadow, blush, bronzer, and setting powder. They provide more diffused, natural-looking application than synthetic brushes for these products. Synthetic brushes are better for liquid and cream products (foundation, concealer) as natural bristles can absorb too much product.

The most sustainable approach is a small set of high-quality, natural bristle brushes that will last for years, rather than a large set of cheap synthetic brushes that wear out quickly. Four to five quality brushes cover most makeup needs: a powder brush, a blush brush, an eyeshadow brush, a blending brush, and a lip brush.

Store brushes upright in a cup or brush holder, bristles up, to maintain their shape. After washing, dry flat or hanging bristles-down to prevent water running into the ferrule. Never store damp brushes upright or in a closed container while still wet. A travel roll or case protects brushes during transport.
