Hair Brushes & Combs
EcoWarehouse stocks wooden combs and natural bristle hair brushes as plastic-free alternatives. Wooden combs are anti-static, gentle on the scalp, and last for years. Natural bristle brushes distribute scalp oils through the hair and are gentler than synthetic alternatives on fine or damaged hair.
Frequently asked questions
Wooden combs are anti-static (plastic generates static that causes frizz), smooth on hair cuticles, gentle on the scalp, and biodegradable. They are particularly beneficial for fine, curly, or colour-treated hair that is prone to static and breakage from plastic combs.
A wide-tooth wooden comb is the gentlest option for detangling wet hair. Wet hair stretches and breaks more easily than dry hair. Wide-tooth combs work through knots with minimal tension and breakage, starting from the ends and working up to the roots. Never use a fine-tooth comb on wet hair.
Remove hair from the comb, then wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking in water, which causes warping. Dry immediately with a cloth. Occasionally rub with a small amount of coconut oil or beeswax to condition the wood. A well-maintained wooden comb lasts many years.
Natural hair brushes typically use boar bristle, which is similar in structure to human hair. Boar bristle brushes distribute scalp sebum along the hair shaft, naturally conditioning the hair without added product. They are also effective for smoothing the cuticle and adding shine. They are recommended for fine to medium hair and less effective for very thick or coarse hair, which needs a mix of bristle and nylon pins.
Remove hair from the brush regularly using a comb or your fingers. Every two to four weeks, mix a small amount of shampoo with warm water and work it into the bristles with your fingers, then rinse gently. Pat dry with a towel and dry bristles-down to prevent water entering the cushion base. Allow to air dry completely before use.
