Lip Balms
EcoWarehouse stocks natural lip balms made from beeswax, shea butter, and plant oils, free from petrolatum (petroleum jelly), synthetic fragrance, parabens, and artificial colour. Conventional lip balms often use petrolatum as the primary ingredient, a petroleum by-product that forms a barrier on the skin but does not moisturise. Beeswax and shea butter actually condition and nourish lip tissue.
Frequently asked questions
Petrolatum (petroleum jelly) is a mineral oil derivative that forms an occlusive barrier on the lips preventing moisture loss but does not add moisture or condition the skin. With repeated use it can create apparent dependency, as lips rely on the barrier rather than retaining moisture naturally. Plant-based alternatives like beeswax and shea butter condition and nourish the lip skin.
Beeswax provides an effective protective barrier while allowing skin to breathe. Shea butter intensely moisturises and repairs dry, chapped skin. Coconut oil provides moisture and has mild antibacterial properties. Vitamin E (tocopherol) is an antioxidant that protects and repairs skin. Castor oil provides gloss and additional moisture.
Yes. Natural lip balms containing shea butter, beeswax, and plant oils are highly effective for chapped lips. Apply frequently throughout the day and before bed for the best results. Exfoliating lips gently with a soft toothbrush or sugar scrub before applying balm removes dead skin and improves absorption.
Yes. The lips have very little melanin and no sebaceous glands, making them prone to sunburn and UV-related damage. A lip balm with SPF 15 or higher provides effective protection during extended outdoor exposure. If an SPF lip balm is not available, applying a small amount of mineral sunscreen from your face routine to your lips works as a practical alternative. Standard beeswax lip balm provides moisture and conditioning but no UV protection.
Natural lip balms without synthetic preservatives typically have a shelf life of 6 to 12 months. Check the PAO (period after opening) symbol on the packaging — the number inside the open jar symbol indicates months after opening. Store away from heat and direct sunlight to preserve freshness.
