Oral Care
EcoWarehouse stocks a comprehensive range of plastic-free oral care products for NZ customers, covering bamboo toothbrushes, natural toothpaste, bamboo charcoal infused dental floss, tongue scrapers, and kids' oral care. New Zealand sends an estimated 16 million toothbrushes to landfill each year. Switching to bamboo reduces this significantly.
What to look for in natural oral care
For toothbrushes, look for bamboo handles with nylon or plant-based bristles. Fully compostable bristles exist but are currently less effective than nylon. For toothpaste, avoid sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS, a foaming agent that can irritate mouth tissue), artificial sweeteners, and microbeads. Natural toothpaste tablets and paste made with calcium carbonate, kaolin, and essential oils are effective alternatives. For floss, bamboo charcoal infused floss in glass jars or refillable dispensers replaces plastic-packaged synthetic floss.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The cleaning effectiveness of a toothbrush depends on bristle quality and brushing technique, not handle material. Bamboo-handled toothbrushes with quality nylon bristles clean teeth identically to plastic-handled equivalents. The New Zealand Dental Association recommends brushing technique over brush type as the primary factor in oral health outcomes.
Yes. The bamboo handle is compostable in a home compost or green waste bin. The nylon bristles should be removed first using pliers or by snapping off the head. Nylon is not compostable and goes in general waste. The bamboo handle alone breaks down within several months in a home compost.
EcoWarehouse stocks natural toothpaste in tablet, paste, and powder formats. Toothpaste tablets eliminate tube waste entirely — each tablet is a single dose that foams when chewed with a wet toothbrush. All options are free from SLS and artificial sweeteners. Both fluoride-free and fluoride-containing options are available.
New Zealand sends an estimated 16 million toothbrushes to landfill each year. Conventional plastic toothbrush handles persist for hundreds of years without degrading. Switching to bamboo-handled toothbrushes allows the handle to be composted at end of life, significantly reducing this plastic waste.
Yes. Toothpaste tablets contain the same active cleaning ingredients as conventional paste: mild abrasives, foaming agents, and flavouring. Chewing the tablet releases the ingredients and creates a foam that functions identically to squeezed paste. They are particularly convenient for travel as they are not subject to liquid restrictions.
Our bamboo charcoal dental floss is made from PET fibre infused with bamboo charcoal, so the floss itself is not compostable. The real win is the packaging: the glass jar is reusable and recyclable, replacing the plastic dispenser that comes with conventional floss. Conventional floss is also made from nylon or PET and sold in plastic packaging, so switching to our version eliminates the single-use plastic container without any greenwashing on the floss itself.
