Toothbrushes
EcoWarehouse stocks bamboo toothbrushes for adults and children, with soft, medium, and charcoal-infused bristle options. New Zealand sends an estimated 16 million toothbrushes to landfill each year. Switching to a bamboo-handled toothbrush reduces this significantly: the handle is compostable, and only the nylon bristles require removal before composting.
Frequently asked questions
Remove the bristles using pliers or by snapping off the bristle head before disposal. The bamboo handle can then go in your home compost or green waste bin. The nylon bristles go in general waste. Some councils accept the whole handle in green waste without bristle removal — check your local guidelines.
Charcoal-infused bristles are marketed for whitening and antibacterial properties. Evidence for meaningful benefit over standard nylon bristles is limited. Both clean teeth equally effectively. The choice comes down to personal preference. Charcoal bristles are dark in colour, which some people prefer and others find off-putting.
Children's toothbrushes have smaller heads and shorter handles. EcoWarehouse stocks bamboo toothbrushes in child sizes suitable from approximately age 3. For toddlers under 3, a finger brush or very soft infant toothbrush is more appropriate. Introduce children's bamboo toothbrushes as soon as they can manage a full-size children's brush.
The New Zealand Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three months, or sooner if bristles are frayed or splayed. Frayed bristles are less effective at cleaning and do not reach between teeth. A bamboo toothbrush follows the same replacement schedule as a conventional brush.
Yes. The bamboo handle of a quality toothbrush will last well beyond the recommended three-month replacement interval. The bristles are the same quality nylon as conventional toothbrushes and wear at the same rate. Replace on the recommended schedule regardless of handle material.
Yes. EcoWarehouse's bamboo toothbrushes come in cardboard or paper packaging with no plastic. The handle, packaging, and any outer wrapping are plastic-free. Only the nylon bristles are non-compostable — these are removed before composting the handle.
