Frequently asked questions
Look for recognisable plant-based ingredients: shea butter, jojoba oil, aloe vera, rosehip oil, coconut oil, and beeswax are all effective and well-tolerated. Avoid mineral oil (listed as paraffinum liquidum), synthetic fragrance, parabens, and PEG compounds. A short ingredient list with recognisable names is the best indicator of a genuinely clean product.
Rosehip oil is well suited to NZ conditions. It is high in essential fatty acids and natural vitamin A (beta-carotene), absorbs readily without greasiness, and is effective for dry skin, uneven skin tone, fine lines, and sun-damaged skin. It suits most skin types including oily and combination when used in small amounts. NZ has one of the highest UV indices in the world, making rosehip's skin-repair properties particularly relevant.
Face moisturisers are formulated for the thinner, more sensitive skin of the face, which has more sebaceous glands and is more reactive to ingredients. Body lotions are typically richer and designed for larger areas. Using a body lotion on the face can clog pores or cause reactions in sensitive skin. A dedicated face moisturiser is recommended for the face.
Mineral oil (paraffinum liquidum) is a by-product of petroleum refining used as a cheap emollient in many conventional moisturisers. It forms an occlusive layer on the skin that prevents moisture loss but does not add moisture or nutrients, and can clog pores for some skin types. Plant-based alternatives such as jojoba, shea, and rosehip oil nourish the skin rather than simply coating it.
For most everyday moisturising needs, yes. Plant-based oils and butters are highly effective skin conditioning agents. Conventional moisturisers often rely on mineral oil and synthetic emollients, which create a smooth skin feel without adding nutritional benefit. Plant oils like jojoba, rosehip, and shea butter provide both moisture retention and active compounds that support skin health.
