Soapnut shells are the dried fruit of the Sapindus Mukorossi tree, grown in India. The shells contain saponin — a natural surfactant that releases when they come into contact with water and acts as a gentle, effective detergent. One kilogram washes up to 365 loads of laundry or dishes, making them one of the most cost-effective eco cleaning swaps available.

Place 6 to 8 shells in the included cotton muslin bag and add it to your washing machine with your laundry. Each bag of shells can be reused for approximately 6 washes before the shells become soft and spent, at which point they go straight into the compost. They work at all water temperatures but release more saponin in warmer water. Suitable for handwashing too — soak the bag in warm water for a few minutes to generate suds.
