Material used for making the reusable water balloons:
Ideally, EcoSplat wanted a material that was both reusable and biodegradable at the end of its life. However, cotton and wool weren’t suitable—they didn’t absorb enough water or release it quickly. Another issue with cotton and wool is their slower drying time, which makes them more prone to mould. Plus, they don’t want reusable products to start biodegrading while they’re still in use.
The best-performing material turned out to be polyester. It absorbs a significant amount of water and releases it quickly, making the splats even better than traditional water balloons (and you get up to six splats before needing to re-dunk!). Polyester dries fast, resists mould, and is soft, so the balloons don’t hurt on impact.
In a circular economy, the goal is to keep resources and materials in use for as long as possible.
