Hohepa is a community for children and adults who have intellectual disabilities. Through living, working and taking an active part in community life alongside co-workers, residents grow to experience satisfying lives with as much independence as possible. For residents and staff, our Vision is that ‘every life is fully lived’.
The Candles Workshop in Napier is one of several work centres where people learn and master hand-crafts. Hohepa's mission is to bring a bright light into everybody’s life: the candle makers and our customers.
Candle-making is an ancient craft which connects a sense of aesthetics and beauty with a highly developed set of skills which suits the workers well – mostly adults with an intellectual disability. An environment of warmth and colour coupled with a measured working pace which engages and supports people in their physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
When we source our products, we try to find as many environmental benefits as possible. We source eco products that do not cause any unnecessary harm to our environment.
This particular product matches the following critera (click on each to see other products matching the same):
Recycling has many benefits like saving energy, conserving raw materials, reducing the amount of stuff that goes to landfills and it's also saving you money. 2.5 Million Tons of waste go to landfills each year (8kg per person/week) 3/4 could be saved by re-using, recycling and composting. Re-duce, Re-use, Re-cycle!
Many people suffer from allergies, asthma and other sensitivities because of products that contain toxins or otherwise harmful ingredients. Most of these products are used inside the house eg. for cleaning, as body care products, as a detergent and so on. We try to source products that are mostly natural and do not cause any harm to you or your environment.
What is the difference? Compostable materials provide the earth with nutrients once it has completely broken down. Biodegradable materials refer to the ability of breaking down and return to nature. Buying products that are compostable and/or biodegradable will help to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills.
At the beginning of most production chains are the workers and farmers (producers). Sadly they do not always get a fair share of the benefits of the trade. You as a consumer can now make a conscious decision about buying fairtrade or fairly traded products and putting this right.
Hohepa's principles are based on a holistic view of the human being which were developed by Rudolf Steiner. Anthroposophy also has a holistic understanding of the life circle. Work should be meaningful and make sense. The Candle workshop was initially setup to produce candles for Hōhepa and the wider community. Now we are proudly turning about 1000kg of Beeswax yearly into hand crafted high quality candles. The candles are made by a dedicated and hardworking team which creates all our candles with love, care and expertise. Some people have been participating in the Hōhepa Candle Workshop for about 30 years, others have started since we moved to Napier. We are producing a natural product out of 100% locally sourced Beeswax from Takapau Kintail Honey.
